About 90% of the seeds in the threshing unit are separated from the bunches and along with the chopped straw, they fall on the seed tray through the anti-threshing holes. Ten percent of the remaining seeds in the cluster (Kezel) are also separated in the separation unit of the combine and return to the threshing unit.

The separating unit consists of a number of straws, which, while oscillating, first separate the remaining seeds from the stem. Secondly, the stubbles are moved out of the combine.
To prevent the occurrence of a critical flow of straw and stubble in the upper space of the straw hopper, hanging curtains are used under the name of retarding curtains.
