"Silo" means a storage facility, and the fermented, sour, or silage food is also called silo. The objectives and benefits of silage production are as follows:
- Increasing the nutritional value of forage by adding various substances to it.
- Precision in preparing and storing forage to minimize nutrient loss.
- Producing highly palatable forage.
- Silage contains high amounts of nutrients and does not exceed 11 to 15 percent dry matter losses, unlike drying methods which result in losses of 21 to 31 percent.
- Silage has very low protein losses.
- Silage is moist, affordable, and easily used for animal consumption in all seasons.
- Harvesting, transferring forage, preparing silage materials, and ultimately using silage can be fully mechanized.
- Silage occupies less space compared to dried forage.
- Silo can be stored without spoilage for years.
- Silaging requires less machinery compared to drying forages.
