Corn is one of the most valuable foods for livestock. Corn is harvested in two forms: grain and fodder. In grain harvesting, the grain is separated from the corn bush and in fodder harvesting, the corn bush is completely harvested and crushed, then the crushed corn is ensiled until it is fermented and prepared for animal consumption.
The most important conditions of corn for ensiling are:
1- Chopped corn pieces should have the right cutting quality and the same size:
The cut cross-section of fodder must be of the same shape and size, and the cross-section must be cut (not crushed or torn) because otherwise the water in the vessels will easily come out due to a low pressure and cause the food in the When corn is ensiled, it is removed and its nutritional value is reduced and it becomes indigestible, and also the mixing of ingredients in fodder distribution machines such as feeder mixer is done slowly.
Incorrect cutting of fodder
Corn juice is removed due to improper cutting
Correct cutting of fodder
Mixing and distribution of fodder by feeder mixer
2- Forage corn must be harvested at the appropriate stage of growth:
When harvesting corn, the amount of water in the stem, leaves, and seeds should reach the desired level. This optimal size can be determined according to the appearance of the corn bush as follows:
The male inflorescence on the top of the corn plant is open and the two lower stamens are placed horizontally.
The color of the cob head should be blackish brown. The seeds should be yellow so that one third of the bottom of the seed is hard.
Some lower leaves are dry.
